These were the best NCHSAA JV football teams in 2023 (2025)

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be delivering football preview content to HSOT Insiders.

Here's a breakdown of which N.C. High School Athletic Association schools had the best JV football teams during the 2023 season. JV success doesn't always translate to varsity success, but JV performance is a valuable piece of the forecasting puzzle.

Multiple things can be true:

  • Due to a variety of factors, good JV teams don't always become good varsity teams.
  • Some good JV teams do translate to varsity success. Sometimes "breakout" varsity teams were dominant on JV.
  • Most of the very top high school football players will already make varsity by the time that they are a sophomore, so the JV performance doesn't always indicate the true amount of young talent a program has.
  • Some players on JV are very talented but wouldn't have gotten proper playing time on varsity due to good older depth at their position.
  • Some JV players can become better plays when they are on varsity as a result of hard work, strength training, or a growth spurt of some kind.
  • Some players who were good on JV might hit some kind of development wall that will limit their ability at the varsity level.
  • A good level of talent on a JV team means that a varsity team can have good depth when those classes ascend. It doesn't always mean that the varsity team will have the necessary star power or high-level coaching that a team needs to compete for state or conference championships.

After compiling all of the records of schools that had a JV football team, here is a list of all of the ones that had a winning percentage of over .600.

(Note: Records compiled from MaxPreps. Only JV teams that played at least six games are included.)
